A password is something secret and is something that is used to protect your online accounts and websites from other people who have plans of sabotaging your account. They could be hackers or identity thieves that want to steal your personal information.
While nothing is foolproof because even the best and most secure government websites with much protection have been hacked, but at least you can lessen the chances by not using common words.
