SpyEye Trojan Brings Scare to Online Banking World

In the past, we only need to check our online account regularly to see if there is fraudulent activity.

But things have changed when an Israeli-based security firm called Trusteer has discovered an elaborate new computer virus called the SpyEye Trojan Horse.

This new computer virus makes use of information saved online. Once it infects a computer, it lies dormant until somebody accesses an online banking site.

In the two-step process that SpyEye follows, it first infects a computer and remains dormant until a trigger is pulled. And the trigger? The accessing of an online bank or banking website. It steals login information and then tricks the user into divulging more personal data. And after the stolen number is used in a purchase, the virus will then destroy the recent history data and kinda prevents the real owner to access his account–at least for awhile. Because of this delay, it will be too late to realize that the account had fraudulent activity.

It is like getting robbed under your nose and not knowing about it.

The SpyEye Trojan was discovered after a large retail bank in the United States noticed it and reported it to the security firm. The virus makes sure that it covers it tracks well. While it records all the fraud it has committed, it does remove the activity from the online transaction lists. Then it edits the balance so that the real account owner does not get suspicious.

People should be aware of this and always have active and updated anti-virus and malware protection running.
